Artist's Statement In my paintings and drawings I use different perspectives and scales and seemingly disconnected images to illustrate interlocking feelings and to create a flow within the composition. I think of each image as a symbol whose meaning changes in relationship to its neighbors'. The images could represent puns or sayings, or traditional meanings. I have noticed that viewers search for one definition or answer when looking at my works. The paintings were not intended to do that. I feel that finding an absolute story for each painting robs them of mystery, poetry, and constant shifts of meaning, that make me want to keep on looking and coming up with new ways of connecting the elements. Each painting does, however, operate under a general theme, for example the process of coming to terms with the destruction of an established life, as in Catharsis; or coming to terms with our intuitive natures in We Want, We Need, We Do. |
